Benefit

To impart the basic skills required of a dog and handler to enable them to become an effective licensed team to detect the illegal use of drugs in the operational environment.

Aim

The aim is to meet the growing demands in the field of drug enforcement and will include training in the detection of all illegal substances which may currently be in use.

Learning Areas

To ensure that the handler:-

 Is capable of handling a drugs search dog

 Can be self-motivated, conscientious and can work without supervision possessing common-sense, confidence, patience and determination

To establish if the dog has:

 An above average ability to search, willingness to work, a good temperament with no undue aggression or nervousness

 The capability to work in all types of conditions and the stamina to work for long periods without tiring

To train the handler in:

 The correct method of working their drugs search dog during a search

 The safe handling of drugs and associated materials

 An awareness of drugs types, classification and effects

To train the dog:

 To be obedient both on and off the lead under all conditions

 To detect and indicate the presence of drugs for which it has been trained

 To search all types of areas, buildings, vehicles and outside terrain

 To ignore all reasonable distractions i.e. noise, movement or alternative odours from a human, animal or artificial source which is not physically interfering with the dog

 To accept all reasonable form of transport / carriage

Benefit

The successful candidate will be capable of handling a passive search dog, in an operational environment, detecting the presence of illegal substances secreted on the person.

Aim

This course is designed to meet the growing demands in the field of drug enforcement and will include training in the detection of all the known illegal drugs substances in use.

To ensure that the handler:-

 Is capable of handling a passive drugs search dog

 Can be self-motivated and conscientious

 Has the ability to work without supervision

 Posses the necessary common sense, combined with confidence, patience and determination

 Is updated with the current legislation

To ensure that the dog has:-

 The necessary physical condition and general health to undertake the task

 Has an above average ability to search and willingness to work

 Has a good temperament - Not unduly aggressive or nervous

 Has the capability to work in all types of conditions
